Couplers

Intramanual Couplers:
Supercouplers

Intramanual couplers allow the stop combination from a division to also sound one octave higher or lower on the same division. Like intramural sports, they operate within a single division.

When Swell stops are pulled and a key is played on the Swell, Swell to Swell 4' makes each and every stop drawn on the Swell play also the pipe AN OCTAVE HIGHER on that stop than its standard pitch. Because it duplicates pitches up an octave, Swell to Swell 4' is also called a “Supercoupler” (as opposed to “Subcoupler”). If Swell to Swell 4' were pulled in combination with a Bourdon 8', for example, playing the key Tenor C would sound both the Tenor C pipe and the Middle C pipe from the Bourdon 8' rank.

A 4' indication on a coupler means “an octave higher,” not 4-foot pitch.

TRY IT: Try each of the combinations to the right. If there are no supercouplers on your organ, study this screen carefully and then proceed with the lesson.
