Solo/Accomp. Contrast

Balance

We have already considered the solo part in the context of range, volume, and timbre. Let us now consider the relationship between solo and accompaniment in each of these contexts.

Choosing the RANGE of the manual part of the accompaniment is usually a simple matter. In most cases, accept the written range as is, and then build on an 8' foundation as is usual in chorus-type registration.

However, in terms of VOLUME and TIMBRE, the relationship between solo and accompaniment combinations can vary from nearly equal--very little contrast--to great contrast in either or both volume or timbre. For each of the two factors, you might visualize a “balance continuum” that runs between very little contrast and great contrast. (see illustration)
