A stop with an 8' (pronounced “eight-foot”) pitch designation speaks at normal or concert pitch.

Other stops, like transposing instruments, speak at some pitch other than the normal or “unison” pitch:

• 4' stops speak one octave higher.
• 2' stops speak two octaves higher.
• 16' stops speak one octave lower.
