Roman Numerals

In addition to the stop nomenclature and pitch designation found on all speaking stops, a Roman numeral is found on certain speaking stops. A Roman numeral indicates the number of ranks that are engaged when the stop is pulled. These are called compound stops, and typically include:

• mixtures and
• celestes (pronounced “suh-LEHSTS”)

This Roman numeral should not be confused with the Arabic numeral, which is the pitch designation.
