Families: Introduction

The families are distinguished one from another by the nature of the tone they produce. Flue pipe tone (stops from the principal, flute, and string families) ranges from thicker and “fluty” (flute) to thinner and “stringy” (string). Principal tone blends some of the richness of the flute with the incisiveness of string tone.
