Pipe Scale

Flue pipe tone quality and volume are determined by several factors, but primary among them is the PIPE SCALE, the ratio of the pipe diameter to its speaking length.

WIDE-SCALE pipes (like flutes) are relatively wide in relation to their height.

NARROW-SCALE pipes (like strings) are relatively narrow in relation to their height.

MEDIUM-SCALE pipes (like principals) lie somewhere in between. (continued)
