1. PRE-LOCATE
As soon as a foot is finished playing a key, prepare (pre-locate) it over the next key. This leads to greater peace of mind than allowing the foot to dangle until the very moment that it must play.
If necessary, remind yourself in the score to pre-locate. Determine the point in the score (at some point after the foot becomes free) where you have a free instant to pre-locate. Place a note head in parentheses at that point with a pedaling indication (see highlighted spot below). When that moment arrives in performance, pre-locate the foot and keep it in place until time to play.
