2. PERFECT LEGATO. Listen for a perfectly smooth connection between the notes of each line that are not repeated notes (see purple highlights). Do not allow the legato in the pedal line to be broken simply because a break occurs in the left-hand line, or because a fingering crossing is difficult.

In the left-hand/pedal studies the only breaks that should happen in the melodic line would be in one of the following cases:

• between repeated notes (all note connections not covered by purple highlights to the right--or see the green highlights on the previous screen, which mark all of the repeated-note connections)
• at phrase breaks (see yellow highlights to the right)
