Introduction

Hymn Project 1

"Saints, Behold" was chosen for the first project for several reasons:

1. The melody line:

• contains no repeated notes
• divides neatly into 2-measure phrases
• fits well underneath the hand
• works rather well as a canon

2. The bass line, as arranged:

• is very simple
• is playable with toes (only) on sharps

The simplicity of Hymn Project 1 will allow you to focus on the three listening skills for practice: precise releases, perfect legato, and independence of line.

The other hymns have melody lines with a few repeated notes, longer or more irregular phrases, and more complex fingering.
