Introduction

Applying the Listening Skills

Take the time to master every detail of the listening skills as applied in Hymn Project 1:

  • Precise releases (commas equal eighth rests)
  • Perfect legato
  • Independence of line (with correct fingering)

If your fingering becomes confused, you have not yet achieved independence of line. The same is true if a phrase break at a comma in one part causes you to break (lift) in one or both of the other parts.

If there are tiny breaks or blurring between some or all of the notes in any one part, slow down and sharpen your listening as you practice until you achieve a perfect legato.

"Saints, Behold": At any comma, if your release occurs before or after the last half-beat of the measure, slow down and refocus your attention on more precise releases.

The other hymns: When finger crossings or other fingering techniques are called for, increase your attention to perfect legato lines. Also, more coordination is required when crossings occur at different times.
