Playing on the Swell

Pull a full chorus of stops on the Swell:

  • Bourdon 8' (or another stop marked 8')
  • Octave 4' (or another stop marked 4')
  • Flute a Bec 2' (or another stop marked 2')

The Swell is, by definition, an expressive division. It is enclosed in a “Swell” box--a large wooden box with shutters or louvers that can be opened or closed from the console. Once it is voiced, a pipe sounds at one volume only, and can only sound louder or softer if the shutters or louvers are opened or closed. Usually lacking a Swell box, most electronic organs only simulate the operation of louvers.

While playing a chord on the Swell, close and open the expression pedal normally located directly over the center-most pedal notes E and F. Remember, the normal position for the expression pedal is fully OPEN.
