An expression pedal is fully closed when the toe is BACK towards you, and fully open when the toe is FORWARD.
In this video example the Swell expression pedal is operated from fully closed position. The Swell box is closed, and the pipes inside the box are muted. As the toe and the expression pedal move forward, the Swell box opens and the pipe sound becomes louder. As the toe is then brought back towards you, the Swell box closes and the sound becomes muted once again.
