Be sensitive to the root cause or “core” of the mistake. There may be a note error in the left hand of the first beat of measure 1, but this may not identify the actual core problem causing the note error. Examples of COMMON CORE PROBLEMS follow (notice that they all stem from fingering or pedaling):

  • using fingering or pedaling that “TRAPS” one into a note error, a break in the line, or a rhythmic irregularity
  • using a fingering or pedaling other than that which is marked, causing a MOMENT OF INDECISION that causes a mistake
  • ATTEMPTING THE IMPOSSIBLE, such as planning fingering for a legato connection between two chords that simply cannot be played without a break in at least one part
