Introduction

Legato Style

As was mentioned on the previous screen, the fingering techniques introduced here are LEGATO techniques--those needed for playing in legato (smooth and connected) style. Some of them are exclusively legato techniques (finger and thumb glissando, substitution), but others can also be used when playing in a more articulate style (direct fingering, redistribution, crossing). Many of the pedal techniques introduced in OrganTutor are also exclusively legato techniques.

OrganTutor focuses on legato style for at least two reasons:

  • legato is accepted by most as the standard touch for hymn playing, and
  • learning legato technique requires much re-orientation in thought and supervision in practice in the beginning stages.
