Building for Richness

Buildup Exercise (continued)

One way to learn how each stop contributes to the combination or ensemble is to practice a hymn or other very familiar piece of organ music, adding stops in a logical “buildup” order at phrase breaks.

Try adding stops in this manner as you play a hymn or piece that you know well. If the stops on your organ do not match those listed to the right, create your own order from softest to loudest.

If you are not at the organ, listen to the example and add imaginary stops in the order given to the right.

Begin with the softest stop, adding one stop at a time as was demonstrated on the previous screen. Make sure that every stop change takes place during the rest, not before the release or after the new attack.

For now, avoid the following stops in the buildup:

  • 1 3/5' stops or any stop labeled “Cornet”
  • any celestes
  • any reeds
