Adding Chorus Reeds

Chorus reeds add “fire” and strength to the combination. Because of their high volume, they blend best when the flue stops to which they are added are of similar volume, particularly principals.

Chorus reeds typically appear at 16', 8', and 4' pitch. The 8' reed is normally added first. Then, if a brighter reed sound is wanted, the 4' reed is added. For a darker reed sound, add the 16' (not 4') reed to the 8' sound. For a full reed chorus (see next screen), use all three reeds.

The reed normally blends best when added with or after the chorus mixture. However, a particularly effective means of expression is possible when reeds are added to combinations of 8', 4', and 2' flue stops, with mutations. The mixtures can then be added later for more brilliance.

  • Example #1: principal chorus alone, then only 8' reed added
  • Example #2: 8' and 4' reeds added
  • Example #3: 8' and 16' reeds added
  • Example #4: all three reeds added
