Playing on the Swell

Pull a full chorus of stops on the Swell:

  • Bourdon 8' (or another stop marked 8')
  • Octave 4' (or another stop marked 4')
  • Flute a Bec 2' (or another stop marked 2')

Once it is voiced, a pipe sounds at one volume only, and can only sound louder or softer to the listeners if it is enclosed in a “Swell Box"--a large wooden box with shutters or louvers that can be opened or closed from the console. The Swell is, by definition, an expressive division--it is contained within a swell box.

Most electronic ogans lack a swell box, and only simulate the operation of louvers electronically.

While playing a chord on the Swell, close and open the main expression pedal, normally located directly over the center-most pedal notes E and F. Remember, the normal position for any expression pedal is fully open.
