Normally the expression pedal is operated by placing the entire foot flat on the pedal. It is fully open when the toe is forward, and closed when the heel is pressed forward and the toe comes back towards you. When time does not allow placing the entire foot, the toe can quickly tap the top or bottom of the pedal.
In this video example the Swell expression pedal is operated from a fully closed position. When the Swell box is closed, and the pipes inside the box are muted. As the toe and the expression pedal move forward, the swell box opens and the pipe sound becomes louder. As the heel is pressed forward and the toe comes back towards you, the swell box closes and the sound becomes muted once again.
