Because of various modern devices, stop combinations can be prepared and changes executed in a number of ways. The most common of these will be explored throughout this lesson.
Registration “by hand” is the most basic of these methods. This refers to building a combination (i.e., pulling stops) without using the combination action. It may take longer and is ineffective for very quick changes involving many stops, but when you register by hand you know exactly what stops you are pulling. Some organs have combination actions that do not operate properly, that are undependable, or that cannot be changed by a visiting organist. Other organs have no combination action at all.
It is a good idea to be able to register by hand whenever possible.
