This duo presents the first part in the upper staff in the soprano range. We will register with an 8' solo stop or a combination built on an 8' foundation. Since the hymn upon which the piece is based is on the contemplative side, we will use a solo stop or a combination of softer to moderate volume. Given the long note values (hymn melody) in the first part, we will look for a gentle solo reed tone.
Against the reed in the first part, flutes 8' and 4' or flute 8' and principal 4' should balance in the second part. Contrast will be achieved through the use of a reed in the first part and flues in the second. Even though the highest rank appears in the lower part, breaking a rule of clarity, the penetrating nature of most solo reeds will prevail over softer 8' and 4' stops.
