Chorale prelude, “Ich ruf zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ!” by Johann Sebastian Bach

The first part of this trio, another hymn melody, appears in the upper staff in the soprano range. We will register with an 8' foundation, using a soft solo stop or combination to reflect the contemplative nature of this hymn. This time we will try a small combination based on flute tone: 8' and 2 2/3' with tremulant.

Flutes 8' and 4' in the second part will balance the gentle first part. This offers contrast mainly through pitch: gap registration in the first part, soft 8' and 4' tone in the second.

The pedal part is a classic bassline, with repeated notes that remind us of the double bassist's bow. Pedal flutes 16' and 8' would offer both definition and contrast in pitch with the left-hand 8' and 4' stops.

  • Swell (first part): Bourdon 8', Nazard 2 2/3' with tremulant
  • Great (second part): Gedackt 8' and 4'
  • Pedal: Subbass 16' Gedackt 8'

Some alternatives for the first part:

  • Great Principal 8' (against Swell flues 8' 4')
  • Great Gedackt 4' with tremulant
  • Swell cornet (against Great Gedackt 8' and Prestant 4')
