The three parts of this canon are equal in melodic and rhythmic character. Some prominence will result from the higher range of the RH part and the solo entrance of the pedal part. Because of the somber nature of the theme, we will choose balanced combinations of a medium volume in all three parts, with flue tone throughout. To achieve contrast we will extend upward in pitch in the high part (full Swell cornet), downward in pitch in the low part (16' principal and 8' flute), and will remain closer to 8' pitch in the middle part (with principals 8' and 4').
