Trio/Duo Registration

Trio or duo is a type of registration that may be used when the following conditions are met:

• there are ONLY TWO MANUAL PARTS, and
• either of the following:

--there is either ONE PEDAL PART (in which case it is trio type), or
--there is NO PEDAL PART (duo type).

In a true trio (or duo), each part is played on a solo stop combination on two different manuals and in the Pedal.

Trio/duo registration is one of the three primary types of organ registration.

Note: throughout this lesson, the term “duo” will be seen less frequently than the term “trio.” However, many facets of the registration of the manual parts in a trio may be applied directly to the duo.
