Introduction

Asthetic Ideals

Some of the aesthetic ideals of the trio or duo as a piece of music, ideals that should be reflected in the registration of such pieces, are as follows:

  • CLARITY (each line is to be heard as a line)
  • BALANCE (the lines are similar in volume)
  • CONTRAST or INDEPENDENCE (the listener should be able to follow each line)

CLARITY is an important element that distinguishes a trio from a solo with accompaniment. Clarity is best achieved in softer, lighter combinations; hence, registration for the trio or duo tends to use few stops, and tends to favor the clear, quick-speaking stops and combinations.
