The “True” Trio
The “textbook” trio consists of three parts (lines) that share these characteristics:
- similarity in RHYTHMIC ACTIVITY
- similarity in MELODIC CHARACTER
- contrast in SOUNDING RANGE (RH highest, Pedal lowest, LH in between)
So we apply a registrational plan that promotes clarity, balance, and contrast. The parts are registered with clear stops or combinations, and with similar volume (balance), but so that each can be heard as an independent musical line (contrast):
- one part is played by the RH on one manual, one by the LH on another, one by the feet (this independence sets the stage for varying degrees of balance and contrast)
- all parts are SIMILAR IN VOLUME
- all parts CONTRAST IN TONAL QUALITY
