The crescendo pedal, located to the extreme right of the expression pedals, increases volume in a very different way from an expression pedal. It does so by adding stops “blindly” in a pre-determined order until nearly all stops that contribute to the ensemble are engaged. As the pedal is closed, the stops are retired in reverse order. Only the stops that had been physically drawn will remain sounding when the pedal is fully closed. (See video examples on the next screen.)
Cancel all stops on the organ, and then pull a single soft 8' manual stop and a soft 16' pedal stop. As you hold a chord on the Great and a note in the Pedal (with the left foot), open the crescendo pedal very slowly with your right foot. Listen as the stops enter one at a time, each one contributing to the ensemble. Now reverse the process, bringing the crescendo pedal slowly closed as you hear the stops retire one by one. When fully closed, you should hear only the soft stops that you had pulled at the beginning.
