Larger organs may include more than one type of crescendo: an “alternate crescendo.” If the thumb piston or stop tab is activated that is titled “Crescendo A,” “Crescendo B,” “Orchestral Crescendo,” or something similar, an alternative order of stops can be engaged by operating the same crescendo pedal.
If your organ is equipped with an alternate crescendo, try the following. Listen again to the standard crescendo: cancel all stops, hold a chord on the Great and a note in the Pedal, and then slowly open the crescendo pedal until it is fully open. Now bring it slowly closed.
Next, activate the thumb piston or stop tab that controls the alternate crescendo. Listen now to the crescendo, and note the different type of build-up. Be sure to close the crescendo pedal fully before moving on!
