Non-Speaking Stops

Every speaking stop has a voice of its own. A stop that has no voice of its own but that manipulates speaking stops is called a non-speaking stop. An entire lesson is devoted to this topic. For now, simply try out two important types of non-speaking stops.

COUPLER
Press Memory A (or Memory 1), and then general piston 5, which includes a chorus of stops at 8', 4', and 2' pitches on the Great and the Swell (these were set into memory earlier in this lesson). The Pedal includes 16', 8', and 4' pitches. Now retire (take off) all of the Pedal stops, and pull Great to Pedal [8']. Play the lowest C on the Swell, and then on the Great, and then finally on the Pedal. Note that the lowest C of the Great and the Pedal sound identical. The Great has been “coupled” to the pedal with a “unison coupler”. All of the Great stops currently pulled can now be heard whenever you play a key in the Pedal. You can also pull additional Pedal stops if you wish.
